In this chapter, I point out the location of Lijiang Region and Dayan in the first place, and then analyze the natural environment of Dayan from different angles including physiognomy, climate, biologic resources and tour resources. After it, I study the cultural and social environment of Dayan by the introduction of the ethnologic structure, faith, traditional culture, regime, and folk-custom in this area, which set a background to the following discussion.

本章首先指出大研古镇的外在形态是隐藏其后的政治、经济、宗教、文化等各种因素共同作用的结果，接着分析了大研古镇的历史沿革，即不同历史时期中对古镇发展起决定性作用的主要力量及其所导致的古镇面貌的主要改变，以及大研古镇的人文内涵及其演变，即古镇受不同类型文化渗透、影响而具备的特征属性。
