Firstly, two examples, which belong to static analysis and dynamic analysis respectively, were given to show the effectiveness of discrete element method. Then the discrete element method was used to perform dynamic analysis of the Chinese 1 km deep-ocean mining system. The dynamic performance of the entire mining system under different current directions was discussed and compared with that from finite element method.
