Inspired by Psalm 42 in the Book of Psalms, Mendelssohn wrote the music during his honeymoon at age 29 and dedicated his tender and submissive love to God the Creator. His Symphony No.2, Lobgesang was influenced by Beethoven's Choral and he described it as a "symphony-cantata." The composer conducted as many as 500 people for its world premiere at Thomaskirche, Leipzig, creating a spectacular event.
