Methoxystilbene and 2-methoxy-4'-nitrostilbene were synthesized from benzyl chloride and nitrobenzyl chloride by the Wittig reaction, and used as intermediates for the synthesis of the final product fluorescent whitener FP4,4'-bis(2-methoxystyrylbiphenyl via reduction and diazotisation of the latter followed by reaction with the former in the presence of NaOH.

A new organic compound, trans-2--5-dimesitylborylthiophene (abbreviated as DMASBT, 5) with dimesitylboryl, dimethylamino and styryl-thiophene as electron acceptor, electron donor and conjugate bridge respectively, was synthesized. Its crystal structure determined by X-ray diffraction method indicates that the B-C bond between B atom and it bridge is obviously shorter than those of between B atom and mesityl groups. This remarkably strengthened B-C bonding can be regarded as an evidence of additional p-7t conjugation between the B atom and n bridge.

The preparation of avermyctin emulsions in water was achieved by mixing the surfactants polyoxyethylene (10) octylphenyl ether (OP10), polyoxyethylene styrenated phenol ether (602), and polyoxyethylene (40) castor oil ether (EL-40) with polyoxyethylene (20) castor oil ether (EL-20), separatively. Emulsion stability was investigated by analyzing the hydrophile-lipophile balance, critical micelle concentration, and surface tension. Then, the surfactants of polyoxyethylene polyoxypropylene styrenated phenol ether (1601), block copolymer (L64), and octyl phenyl polyoxyethylene phosphonate were added to the emulsion made by blending EL-40 and EL-20, separatively. The stability of the emulsions was investigated further and discussed in terms of droplet size, surface tension, and zeta potential.
