澳大利亚有很多全世界最特别的动物和植物，例如袋鼠、考拉、针鼹及鸭嘴兽，前者是全世界最大的有袋动物，而后两者则是唯一产卵的哺乳类动物。

Thus it happened that the wild animals, jaguars, wild boars, capybaras,koalas, and game of every kind, mad with terror, had fled to the banks ofthe Mercy and to the Tadorn Marsh, beyond the road to Port Balloon.

美洲豹、野猪、水豚、&考拉&以及各种飞禽走兽都惊惶地往慈悲河沿岸和通向气球港的大路那边的潦凫沼地逃去。

考拉，生活在澳大利亚，是澳大利亚奇特的珍贵原始树栖动物，属有袋哺乳类。分布于澳大利亚东南部干旱森林中。考拉身体长约70-80厘米，成年体重8-15公斤，性情温顺，体态憨厚，长相酷似小熊，有一身又厚又软的浓密灰褐色短毛，胸部、腹部、四肢内侧和内耳皮毛呈灰白色，生有一对大耳朵，耳有毛丛，鼻子裸露且扁平，没有尾巴，考拉这是因为它的尾巴经过漫长的岁月已经退化成一个&座垫&，因而能长时间舒适潇洒地坐在树上。
