整体而言，吴三连与《自立晚报》在威权体制时期是一个「悲剧英雄」的角色，也就是在台湾民主启蒙阶段与风起云涌时，吴三连与《自立晚报》是台湾民主政治的象徵橱窗，在追求民主政治与言论自由的历程中，吴三连与《自立晚报》可说是「燃烧自己、照亮民主制度」，最后是油尽灯枯，随著威权体制的解体而逐步走入了历史。
