"Thrasymachus," I said with a quiver, don't be hard upon us.

"斯拉斯马科斯，"我声音也有些颤抖地说，别太苛责我们。

"I know," I said, that this is their manner of thinking, and that this was the thesis which Thrasymachus was maintaining just now, when he censured justice and praised injustice.

"我知道，"我说，这是他们思考问题惯有的方式，这正是斯拉斯马科斯刚才坚持的论点，他不就是这样指责正义、赞美非正义的吗。

Is not that true, Thrasymachus?

我说得对不对，斯拉斯马科斯？

"But surely, Thrasymachus, the arts are the superiors and rulers of their own subjects?"

"可是，斯拉斯马科斯，难道这不就恰好确定无疑地意味着技艺正是哪些高人一等的人或者统治者利益的对象吗？"

"Well," I said,"Thrasymachus, that matter is now settled; but were we not also saying that injustice had strength; do you remember?"

"那么也就是说，"我说，"斯拉斯马科斯，这个问题算是解决了；但是，我们不也说过非正义具有优势；你还记得吗？"

But did we not say, Thrasymachus, that the unjust goes beyond both his like and unlike?

斯拉斯马科斯，难道我们不能因此说不仁不义之徒能够超越自己的好恶吗？

Tell me, Thrasymachus, I said, did you mean by justice what the stronger thought to be his interest, whether really so or not?

那我再问你，斯拉斯马科斯，你能告诉我强者自认为符合了自己的利益这句话，不是这个意思，难道还有别的意思不成？

"And this is because injustice creates divisions and hatreds and fighting, and justice imparts harmony and friendship; is not that true, Thrasymachus?"

"难道是因为非正义能导致分裂、仇恨和战争，而正义能赋予和谐与友爱吗；我说的对不对，斯拉斯马科斯？"

"Very good, Thrasymachus," I said;"and now to take the case of the arts: you would admit that one man is a musician and another not a musician?"

"很好，斯拉斯马科斯，"我说；"不如再引用一个艺术方面的案例：你愿意承认一个人懂音乐而另外一个人不懂音乐的情况彼此同时存在吗？"

For Thrasymachus seems to me, like a snake, to have been charmed by your voice sooner than he ought to have been; but to my mind the nature of justice and injustice have not yet been made clear.

在我看来，斯拉斯马科斯就像一条蛇，总是还没等到他所坚持的意见讨论清楚，就已经迷惑于你的声音；反正我认为正义和非正义的本性仍然没有弄清楚。
