With the re-exposure of a certain layer-such as a painting that is not visible but can in fact be extremely well conserved underneath several layers of lime - a critical question must always be addressed: what is the goal of the restoration of a monument that, as so often is the case, is composed of very different historical layers which are all part of the monument and are all evidence of its history with its various traces of age.
