保护区地处我国南北气候、植物区系、动物区系交汇过渡的秦岭山脉，蕴藏着种类丰富、数量众多的珍稀濒危动植物物种，生物多样性丰富，其中列入国家保护的Ⅰ类动物有大熊猫、羚牛、林麝、金钱豹、金雕等5种；列入国家Ⅱ类保护动物有黑熊、红腹锦鸡、血雉、白冠长尾雉、斑羚、大鲵等11种。
