The journal dedicates to the studies in all aspects of the botany, mycology and phycology of the South Pacific, Australia, South America, southern Africa and Antarctica. Research areas include biosystematics and biogeography, ecology, physiology and biochemistry, genetics and reproductive biology, structure and development, ethnobotany, palaeobotany, bryology, lichenology and plant pathology etc.

The principle fields of the Institute's activity are related to molecular genetics, cytogenetics, immunogenetics, embryology, biochemistry, the physiology of animal stress and ethology, embryo biotechnology and biotechnics, introductions of the results of basic investigations into animal improvement programmes, determination of animal genotypes and their adaptation to environmental conditions and production demands.

On creating model of cultured hippocampal neurons injured by amyloid, we studied the mechanisms of close interrelation between amyloid and Alzheimer"s disease at cell and molecular level with advanced test methods. For example, the technique of optical lens and electron microscope , immunohistochemical method,biochemistry.molecular biology and HPLC, so as to deeply probe into the mechanisms that Decotion of Rehamanniae prelects and treats Alzheimer"s disease.

In this paper, the ability and mechanism of antibacterial and immune defense ofChinese shrimp was studied using cytological, biochemical, molecular biological andproteomic methods. A sensitive and stable antibacterial and lysozyme assay methodswere selected. The effect of Vibrio anguillarum and laminarin (a kind of beta-1,3-glucan) on the immune ability of haemolymph of Chinese shrimp was analyzed.The changes of total haemocyte counts, antibacterial ability, lysozyme activity andlysosome membrane stability were detected.
