Concept To describe changes in the relative configuration of rocks, imagine that there is a unit sphere, 1 in radius, in the rock before it is deformed. When the rock is deformed homogeneously, the sphere becomes an ellipsoid. Then this ellipsoid is called strain ellipsoid, whose shape and orientationrepresents the rock's strain condition.
