The unique geographic position of shelf and marginal sea causes the material supply of seafloor sediments plenteous and the material sources of them diverse. As terrigenous materials being input into the sea continually and a great deal of authigenous minerals coming into being, the sediments can be used to study the change of sea level and the meterail and energy exchange between the sea and the land.

陆架和边缘海独特的地理位置决定了海底沉积物物源的充足与多样性，陆源物质源源不断地通过河流输入到海洋中，同时大量的自生矿物在海洋中生成，因此研究陆架和边缘海海底沉积物，可以为研究海平面变化、海陆之间物质和能量的交换等作用提供信息。

ABSTRACT The Yellow River delta located in the land and sea interaction zone and is being formed with the coaction of the River and Bohai sea. The three parts of the whole delta, i. e. the delta plain, tidal zone and submerged delta, are in different dynamic environments. The delta plain is controlled by the land surface processes. The tidal zone is under the coaction of the river and the sea.

The cyclonic stress on the sea surface and the strong mixing processes forced by the typhoon play an important role in the processes of the heat, energy and mass exchange between the upper ocean and the deep ocean. Therefore, the study of the ocean response to the typhoon is an important scientific issue.

台风产生的海面气旋式风应力以及强烈的混合过程，对上层海洋与深层海水之间的热量、能量和物质交换产生重大影响，因此研究海洋对于台风过程的响应特征具有重要的科学意义。

Many real-life data examples have been presented in the literature employing LME and NBLME modeling techniquesJones 1993,Davidian and Giltinan 1995,Vonesh and Chinchillo 1996,Pinheiroand Bates 2000,Verbeke and Molenberghs 2000,Diggle et al.2002,and Demidenko2004 among others However for many other practical data example from AIDS clinical trials and other biomedical studies will be presented and used throughout this book for illustration purpose In these amples LME and NLME models are no longer applicable and nonparametric mixed-effects(NPME modeling techniques which are the focuses of this book, are a natural choice at least at the initial stage of exploratory analyses.

The research areas cover genetic and physiological mechanisms of functioning marine organisms; principles of marine biotechnology; genetic and endocrinological mechanisms in marine fish and invertebrates; genetic polymorphism of some marine and fresh water species; biological role of bacterial bioluminescence in the marine environment etc.
