There was a boom of interest in Gesualdo among musicologists in the 1950s, and although performance of his music continues to thrive, Glenn Watkins, an American scholar of renaissance music and the leading authority on Gesualdo's works, reports that academic interest in him is waning, for now. Mr Watkins published a study of Gesualdo's life and music, with a preface by Stravinsky, in 1973; his new book traces the ebb and flow of Gesualdo's reputation over the centuries, and tries to explain it.
