The case attracted the attention of one of China's shrewdest writers, Liu Binyan, who had suffered in the antirightist campaign and the Cultural Revolution for his out-spokenness.

In those days, the Ch'ing archives were being held under careful watch in the hills of Wu-feng, not far from T'ai-chung; the Ch'ing archives held on mainland China were at that time totally inaccessible to me, due to the turmoils of China during the aftermath of the "great leap forward" and the preambles to the equally catastrophic "great proletarian cultural revolution."

When I first went to China in 1979, vestiges of the Cultural Revolution were still evident: revolutionary slogans painted on walls and pockmarks on university buildings from bullets and howitzer shells shot by dueling Red Guards.

Visiting or living in China every year over the past three decades, I have had the personal opportunity to witness dramatic transformations. She was forced out of her home once in 1968, when China's Cultural Revolution sent her to the countryside for re-education.

In reality, what this means is not that revolution is not possible, and communism not desirable, but that these people's revolutionary will and communist orientation have degenerated and—unlike those who have come forward through the course of the Cultural Revolution in our Party, and once again and more deeply have committed themselves to the cause of communism—those who have turned their back on the Party and on revolution recognize that this revolution and its goal of communism will require, but they are not willing to undertake,"the hard work, the risky work, the often unpopular and 'going against the tide' work, to make this a reality."
