Methods Six weeks old male Fischer 344 rats (F344) were used as donors, and six weeks old male F344alb as recipients. All F344alb were divided into 4 groups: group Ⅰ(n=10) was untreated; group Ⅱ(n=10) was treated with CCl4 but no γ-irradiation and transplantation; group Ⅲ(n=10) was transplanted with 1×10^7 BMCs after γ-irradiation, but without CCl4 treatment; group Ⅳ(n=10) was transplanted with 1×10^7 BMCs after γ-irradiation, with CCl4 treatment. The BMCs prepared from the donors were infused via the penial veins of recipients immediately after whole body γ-irradiation (7.5Gy) and CCl4 treatment: 4 weeks after BMCs transplantation, CCl4 were injected into peritoneal cavity twice a week for 4 weeks.

A historical cohort of 53 patients who had undergone lung transplantation at the hospital between March 2004 and September 2005 served as a control group. The 2 groups were similar, although obstructive lung disease occurred in more patients in the control group and there were more patients with elevated CVP in the guideline-treated group. Both variables would be expected to favor the control group, Dr. Pilcher said.

The indications were: acute liver failure in one (4%); chronic liver failure in 25 (96%)-10 metabolic, six biliary atresia, five polycystic/liver fibrosis, four other, and one retransplant. Nine (35%) received partial graft; 5 (19%) multivisceral grafts (liver-kidney, liver-bowel) and 12 (46%), conventional OLT.

Based on an intention-to-treat analysis, patients treated with pioglitazone had a significant increase in limb fat compared with those receiving placebo (0.38 vs 0.05 kg; P =.051). No difference was found, however, in the patients treated with stavudine. After excluding these patients, the increased limb fat was even greater for the pioglitazone-treated patients (0.45 vs 0.04 kg; P =.013). Other improvements included increased thigh circumference (1.4 vs 0.2 cm; P =.017) and tricipital skin-fold thickness (0.9 mm vs 0.4 mm; P =.047). No difference was found in subcutaneous abdominal fat or visceral fat.

From 2003 to 2004,83 patients(166 sides) with nasal septum deviation were treated in our hospital,including 38 receiving submucous resection of nasal septum and 45 receiving submucous resection of nasal septum plus unilateral or bilateral partial inferior turbinectomy(SRNS+U/B PIT).
