As the first democratic republic in German history, Weimar demonstrated its democratic spirit not only in political systems, but also in economic activities. The dual mechanism: the Group Contract System across different enterprises, and the "co-determination" inside the enterprise, marked a major achievement of the democratization process of the labor relations in Weimar period.

The massive amount of funds that the German government put into developing the eastern part of the nation has become part of the German Democratic Republic that the world sees today. The vibrancy of some cities in former East Germany, especially tourist sites such as Weimar, Potsdam and Dresden have shiny exteriors belied by new infrastructure. At the end of World War II, on May 2, 1945 Schwerin was taken by U.S. troops. It was turned over to the British on June 1, 1945, and one month later, on July 1, 1945 it was handed over to the Soviet forces, as the British and American forces pulled back from the line of contact to the predesignated occupation zones. Schwerin was then in the Russian Occupation Zone which was to become the German Democratic Republic.
