In his Blood of the Beast, Rolfe uses the classic, religious altarpiece format to show three hands, all symbolic of differing aspects of Irish culture, the bloody red hand is the traditional symbol of Ulster, and the location most affected by 'the troubles,' beside this, a hand playing a bodhran could be mistaken for a gun; a third hand crushes a lily, symbol of peace and purity.
