Mangroves have a well-developed intertwined root system and can effectively hold back suspended substances of land based sources like mud, protecting coastal banks and embankments from wind and wave. Mangroves have a special ecological adaptability such as viviparity, special root system, ability to filter salt out, etc, and the organisms under the mangroves are diverse. The mangroves can therefore act to purify water and to reduce occurrence of red tides.
