Air sparging is widely used for remediating groundwater contamination of solvents or gasoline fuels. Air is injected into the saturated zone in the plume area through sparging well. Injected air contacts the contaminated groundwater and removes volatile organic compounds by volatization.

气提法应用在地下水及土壤污染整治的原理是将空气由注气井打入受污染区域的饱和含水层，注入地下水层的空气与非水相的挥发性有机污染物接触，会将污染地下水层的挥发性有机物挥发出来，并往上流入非饱和层中，再由抽气井抽出非饱和层之气体，将污染的挥发性有机物回收到地表进行处理。
