Leaves 3 or 4 per ultimate branch; sheath margins initially ciliate; auricles purple, falcate, small; oral setae erect, gray-brown; ligule arcuate, margins initially ciliate; blade lanceolate,(7–)10–16 × 1–1.7 cm, proximally white-gray pubescent, secondary veins 4-paired, transverse veins obscure, base cuneate, one margin spinescent-serrulate, other margin obscurely so.

Stems 18-100(-160) cm tall, well-branched above, densely gray villous on lower part, mixed above with short glandular hairs, often with raised lines decurrent from margins of petioles. Leaves subsessile or lower ones with petioles 1-3 mm; cauline blade lanceolate-elliptic to narrowly lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, 3-12 × 0.5-2.5 cm, both surfaces villous, base usually rounded, margin denticulate with 15-60 teeth per side, apex subacute.

Treatments were as follows: fertilization during leaf-expansion period, fertilization during green-leaf period, and no fertilizer. Results showed that individual leaf area, thousand-leaf weight, and leaf distribution were relatively stable with little influence from fertilization. Fertilization during leaf-expansion compared to the green leaf period significantly increased leaf number, leaf weight per plant, and leaf area index. Fertilization during led-expansion also significantly increased the total weight of leaves corresponding to each branch. The 14th to the 17th branches had the largest number of leaves in the canopy with fertilization increasing the weight of each branch but not changing the center of the canopy.
