We have synthesized 4,4'-dinitro-3 4''-dimethyl triphenylamine,(1), in 84% yield in an one-step condensation process between 3,4-dimethyl aniline and 4-fluoro-nitrobenzene. After the auto-oxidation of (1) and the subsequent hydrogenation of the nitro-groups, an AB2 type triphenylamine polyimide intermediate bearing two amine groups and one acid-anhydride group each on individual phenyl ring,{AB2 PI Intermediate}, was prepared successfully. The yields of the autoxidation and the hydrogenation steps are 81% and 90% respectively.

When ATRP of styrene was investigated with 1-phenylethyl bromide/benzyl a,a-dibromide mixture as initiator, the GPC chromatogram shows two elution peaks and the molecular weighs of the peaks are approximately in a 2/1 ratio. It suggests that benzyl dibromide is a difunctional initiator of ATRP of styrene. The analysis of end group using 1H-NMR also proves the result above.

In this research, mixed SAM of HS-(CH2)15-CH3 and HS-(CH2)15-COOH was immobilized on gold substrate through chemical bond, and PEG and PMB were in sequence linked to the –COOH terminal groups on the SAM sureface by EDC/NHS amide coupling.
