Antoninus had not taken this care, but had contumeliously killed a brother of that centurion, whom also he daily threatened, yet retained in his bodyguard; which, as it turned out, was a rash thing to do, and proved the emperor's ruin.

All summer I wandered the fields that were thickening every morning, every rainfall, with weeds and blossoms, with the long loops of the shimmering, and the extravagant- pale as flames they rose and fell back, replete and beautiful- that was all there was- and I too once or twice, at least, felt myself rising, my boots touching suddenly the tops of the weeds, the blue and silky air- listen, passion did it, called me forth, addled me, stripped me clean then covered me with the cloth of happiness- I think there is no other prize, only rapture the gleaming, rapture the illogical the weightless- whether it be for the perfect shapeliness of something you love- like an old German song- or of someone- or the dark floss of the earth itself, heavy and electric.

There was on his face an expression of solemn and holy rapture, as if he were revealing to me the mysteries of his religion. I became far more interested in him than in the socks. I looked at him in amazement."My friend," said I,"if you can keep this up, if this is not merely the enthusiasm that comes from novelty, from having a new job, if you can keep up this zeal and excitement day after day, in ten years you will own every sock in the United States." My amazement at his pride and joy in salesmanship will be easily understood by all who read this article. In many shops the customer has to wait for someone to wait upon him. And when finally some clerk does deign to notice you, you are made to feel as if you were interrupting him. Either he is absorbed in profound thought in which he hates to be disturbed or he is skylarking with a girl clerk and you feel like apologizing for thrusting yourself into such intimacy. He displays no interest either in you or in the goods he is paid to sell. Yet possibly that very clerk who is now so apathetic began his career with hope and enthusiasm. The daily grind was too much for him; the novelty wore off; his only pleasures were found outside of working hours. He became a mechanical, not inspired, salesman. After being mechanical, he became incompetent; then he saw younger clerks who had more zest in their work, promoted over him. He became sour. That was the last stage. His usefulness was over. I have observed this melancholy decline in the lives of so many men in so many occupations that I have come to the conclusion that the surest road to failure is to do things mechanically. There are many teachers in schools and colleges who seem duller than the dullest of their pupils; they go through the motions of teaching, but they are as impersonal as a telephone.

At the same time, it produced a series of imaginings that became deeper and deeper – it was like a hypothetical point that allowed me to be completely immersed in the actual cultural background. Various human weaknesses have certain solemn and stirringly dramatic elements. In order to adapt to the basic visual experience, in order to allow the audience to easily accept and enjoy the underlying elements of the work, I intentionally left white spaces, they looked like hints in a guessing game. The viewer who understands would have a good laugh after becoming suddenly enlightened. This enables the viewer and me to have a sort of conspiratorial relationship, its meaning does not reside in the painting itself, but in the shared cultural background of myself and the audience as well as the shared attitude of such a cultural background. This makes it believable, a hidden bridge, often in a somewhat clear yet somewhat mysterious moment, two strangers who have never met are able to achieve a profound understanding, like that happiness of suddenly catching someone when playing hide and seek as a child ...

Meditation Alone/ firefly译 The Moon Is Mine The moon is mine And the sundries I home mail It's thin, cool and dark Like me under an unlucky star Who stay out straying, with a sadly sorrowful look When facing it You should feel esteem--in my opinion Also you could Weep when looking at it, and Be put in a tight spot, or Behold a man in it coming out Lay Open the Loneliness Lay open the loneliness, perhaps There be no loneliness Under the alone lamp, in the empty room The whole world's dyed orange with rays Everything represents nothing As someone been far away The deserted heart still misses Only lonely is still lonely Wine for one, when wine round three times for one Think of the drip drops, the fallen leaves, and Some time, some seasons, some persons, some Sundries when warm Like I lay open the loneliness Then nothing to keep lonely The Tree All the leaves in this tree fall Its loneliness falls into a face It's limpid and bright Where the sun shines There are blares of colored glaze Exclaim occasionally, or profoundly Stride one's line of sight, such height and weald Straying there --Why there is no wild Divide the Rain Drips Divide the dense rain drip Then you may see decaying scene-- A man in the sun walking with vigorous strides In the shallow puddle Immerges half his nose, spraying Continuous ripples It's simply a groundless guess at daytime Or rather a dream, yet that's it And that I see Sun's weak, and see The sun and water turns to be blank in the air Nov.

It begins with innocent childhood, followed by awkward adolescence trying awkwardly to adapt itself to mature society, with its young passions and follies, its ideals and ambitions; then it reaches a manhood of intense activities, profiting from experience and learning more about society and human nature; at middle age, there is a slight easing of tension, a mellowing of character like the ripening of fruit or the mellowing of good wine, and the gradual acquiring of a more tolerant, more cynical and at the same time a kindlier view of life;then in the sunset of our life, the endocrine glands decrease their activity, and if we have a true philosophy of old age and have ordered our life pattern according to it, it is for us the age of peace and security and leisure and contentment; finally, life flickers out and one goes into eternal sleep, never to wake up again.

Ranged on benches down the sides of the room, the eighty girls sat motionless and erect; a quaint assemblage they appeared, all with plain locks combed from their faces, not a curl visible; in brown dresses, made high and surrounded by a narrow tucker about the throat, with little pockets of holland (shaped something like a Highlander's purse) tied in front of their frocks, and destined to serve the purpose of a work-bag: all, too, wearing woollen stockings and country-made shoes, fastened with brass buckles.

It looked like someone had smeared blue war paint under his eyes, like the sky when it's bruised and about to burst with thunder and rain.

Vast lawns that extend like sheets of vivid green, with here and there clumps of gigantic trees, heaping up rich piles of foliage:the solemn pomp of groves and woodland glades, with the deer trooping in silent herds across them;the hare, bounding away to covert;or the pheasant, suddenly bursting upon the wing:the brook, taught to wind in natural meanderings or expand into a glassy lake:the sequestered pool, reflecting the quivering trees, with the yellow leaf sleeping on its bosom, and the trout roaming fearlessly about its limpid waters;while some rustice temple or sylvan statue, grown green and dank with age, gives an air of classic sanctity to the seclusion.
