Based on careful reading and comparative analysis, two aspects are to be discussed in this thesis, namely, to present Virginia Woolf's contribution to the development of English essays according to the comparative analysis between her essays and works of British essayists since the 16th century, and to summarize the unique characteristics of Virginia Woolf's essays—visualization, narrativity and stream of consciousness.
