Based on the mechanism of ground settlement, a rigorous solution is derived in this paper to find the ground settlement during excavation, taking the action of wall resistance into consideration, and the corresponding computer program is given. By use of the program, the characteristics of ground settlement caused by excavation are analyzed in detail and an excavation case in Chicago is calculated with the result compared to that given before.
