In order to verify the results of theoretical analysis, the shaking table model tests, including free field, plain subsoils of building, and sloped subsoils of building have been conducted.

Based on the simplified method for subsoils of building given by Men et al., a effective stress method is suggested, combined with the use of the static model of pore water pressure generation presented by Martin et al., so that the development of pore-water pressure under the building subsoils can be evaluated directly. Comparing with the total stress method it is easier and more direct to be used.

Some conclusions are drawn as follows: The total tendency of socles is basin-shaped settlement which is bigger in the middle position socles than the peripheral position socles before the pile foundation underpinning. Pile foundation underpinning augments the differential settlements. After soil excavation, middle position socles rebound obviously owing to unloading action, which lessens the differential settlements between middle and peripheral position socles.

The well-known empirical e-lgσ' relation is introduced into the study on one-dimensional nonlinear consolidation of one-layered soil under cyclic loadings. The corresponding consolidation equation is established with the assumptions that the decrease in permeability of soil is proportional to the decrease in compressibility during the consolidation process and that the distribution of initial effective pressure does not vary with depth.
