The characteristics of the variance of the instantaneous velocity for the incident vehicle were analyzed, and an algorithm of automated incident detection for freeway based on GPS was designed. A series of relative issues were also studied, including choice of sampling intervals, determination of detection thresholds, durative detection time and design of the alarm mechanism, etc. The validity and transplantability of the proposed AID algorithm were tested with field data and simulated data.
