This paper presents new data of electronic microprobe analvses on clinopyroxenes from the layers of picrite and associated basalt in this area. It is shown that the clinopyroxenes from the picrite are exclusively diopside, whereas those from the basalt are diopside and augite, suggesting a continuous variation in composition.

On the basis of petrography and mineral chemistry of the xenoliths, the amphiboles in them can be subdivided into four kinds of occurrences ,i.e., 1 the early amphibole inclusions within garnet, being maganesio-hornblende; 2 the primary amphiboles equilibrated with omphacite and garnet in eclogite, belonging to pargasite and pargasitic hornblende; 3 the retrograde amphiboles around garnet and clinopyroxene, mainly being edenitic and actinolitic hornblendes; and 4 the exsolving amphiboles within clinopyroxenes, mainly being edenite, edenitic hornblende and/or ferroan pargasitic hornblende.

The findings indicate that under uniaxial compression, the red sandstones at first experience structural intensification and then structural degradation until they are failed; the unconfined compressive strength of red sandstone is mainly related with compaction rate, pore distribution and connecting condition of mineral grains; and the above factors have a more notable impact on the unconfined compressive strength of red sandstone with the increase of weathering; with the increase of load, the grains area ratio and Euler number decrease, the pore develops towards centralization or collectivization, and the red sandstones gradually lose their resistance to deformation.

There are two kinds of spinels in a granulite terrain of Yushujgou, South Tianshan Mountain. One occurs in the intermediate and basic granulite units and is characterized by enriched Al and poor Cr, belonging to Al_spinel. In thin sections it shows dark green color and subhedral to anhedral form, and coexists with other metamorphic minerals, suggesting a neogenic metamorphic mineral of granulite facies. The other occurs in the adjacent ultramafic rock unit, belonging to Cr_spinel. In thin sections, it is dark brown in color and is scattered among olivine, clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene as irregular grains, indicating a stable residual mineral in the process of granulite facies metamorphism.

These samples were collected along a main street across the urban area and a mountain route from foot to the top. Results demonstrate that the main magnetic minerals in the street dust are magnetite, maghaemite and haematite with some paramagnetic minerals. Plots of Mrs/Ms vs. Bcr/Bc and Xfd % vs. X ARM/SIRM indicate that the main grain size of magnetic minerals in the street dust are pseudo single domain. The results reveal that the Lanzhou city is more polluted in spring than in summer. The main pollution sources are anthropogenic activities (81.9%) and natural dust (18.1%), especially the former. The spatial distribution of pollution is controlled by the topography and weather conditions.
