分子生物学

Bioinformatics represents a new, growing area of science that uses mathematics, informatics and computational approaches to answer biological questions. Recently years bioinformatics develops greatly with the molecule sequences data's rapidly increasing, and the genome sequence analysis mainly involving gene prediction and molecule evolution, becomes its primary research field.

生物信息学是运用数学、信息学、计算机科学等来阐明生物学意义的一门新兴交叉科学，近年来随着分子数据的快速增加而获得极大发展，其中包括基因预测和分子进化研究等内容的基因组序列分析是生物信息学的主要研究领域。

The Awards include CSBMCB-Merck Frosst Award, the Roche Diagnostics Award and the Jeanne Manery Fisher Memorial Lectureship, the last award is only given to a female Canadian scientist who distinguished herself in the field of biochemistry, molecular biology or cellular biology in one or more of the following areas; research, teaching or community service.

Currently, it focuses on the taxonomic study, molecular systematics, zoogeography and Evolutionary biology of Hemiptera, Diptera, and Lepidoptera based on the morphology and by using molecular systematic and biogeography methods.

目前本所主要集中于应用形态学、分子系统学、生物地理学等方法进行半翅目、双翅目及鳞翅目昆虫的分类学、分子系统发育、动物地理学和进化生物学的研究，同时还进行昆虫生理生化、昆虫病理学、害虫防治等方面的研究。

Department of Biological Sciences is primarily dedicated to teaching and research in biology including insect and vertebrate molecular ecology, historical biogeography and population genetics; conservation genetics, crustacean endocrinology, physiology and biochemistry of gametes, vertebrate physiology, systematics, ecology, and zoogeography of freshwater and marine fishes, molecular genetics, reproductive physiology, evolutionary genetics.

Down-regulated expression of PTEN and up-regulated expression of VEGF〓 were considered as two important events in tumorigenesis of ovarian cancer and could act as molecular markers to indicate the pathobiological behaviors of ovarian cancer. Decreased PTEN expression and increased VEGF〓 expression were closely associated with tumorigenesis and pathobiological behaviors of ovarian endometrioid and serous cancer respectively. Reduced expression of PTEN gene might be involved in carcinogenesis and progression of ovarian cancer by up-regulating the VEGF〓 expression to enhance angiogenesis.

The Exobiology Branch conducts research in Exobiology seeking to increase our knowledge of the origin, evolution, and distribution of life in the universe, such as chemical evolution occur in the primitive bodies of the solar system, evidence regarding the early interplay between biological and environmental evolution, and molecular fossils about early microbial evolution so on.
