The results show that the main cause of the angular distortion of the lap joint is the non-uniform distributed inherent shear strain component that is vertical to the weld line and exists in the plane paralleling to the weld line.

In this paper, a 4-node plate element combined with rivet element and contact element is employed to analyze two typical rivet joint structures, i.e., lap joint and butt joint. The penetration between two sub-plates in the lap zone or butt zone is avoided by introducing contact element in the proposed FE model. Bending deformation and its effect on in-plane displacement of the two typical rivet joint structures are studied.
