元老

There are those who say that Lin Yi-hsiung is a senior statesman of the DPP, a heavyweight figure, and his words often put pressure on Chen Shui-bian, but Lin's influence certainly does not come from his charismatic appeal to the masses or his being an authoritative leader, on the contrary, it's his insistence on unadorned democratic ideals that make him charge undauntedly ahead even as he is faced with a powerful army, and even though he is valuable as an ally of the president, once he violates this faith, he cannot but make blunt criticisms.
