Originally a tiny little fishing village called Edo, it became the de facto centre of government in Japan after one of the Shoguns – the military leaders of Japan – built his castle there, and grew bigger and bigger, swollen by government and business.

In the battle of Sekigahara in 1600, Ieyasu defeated the Hideyori loyalists and other Western rivals. The Tokugawa shoguns continued to rule Japan for a remarkable 250 years.
