The shape-shifting alien in The Thing, is an impressive exception – it disturbs all boundaries: human/animal/plant, dead/alive, gender/race etc, it is ultimately formless, and it is this formlessness which credits it with dangerous power, the abject as well as polluting power which we all fear.
