Almost all tungsten miners became bankrupt or were shut down. The main tungsten assets situated at the Northern Caucasia were almost destroyed by low prices and relatively high production costs. In 1997 the hugest tungsten miner in the world - Tyrnausky GOK finally stopped its operation. It produced up to 40 thousand tons of W-concentrate per year during the times of Soviet Union and was a main source of raw material for "Hydrometallurg" conversion plant in Nalchik which became almost bankrupt after the closure of Tyrnausky GOK.
