With the demolishment of the vegetation cover, increasing water-soil erosion worsened physico-chemical properties of soil and, subsequently, some woody plants disappeared and barren land was finally appeared.

Methods: The following five sites in the city were selected as monitoring spots, namely, the First Smelter of Tongling Nonferrous Metal Group, the second Smelter of Tongling Nonferrous Metal Group, the Changjiang High-speed Passageway, Fenghuangshan Copper Mine district, residential area, respectively. The moss species Hypnum plumaeform e collected from Huangshan mountain was placed in nylon bag of 15.5 cm×5.5 cm in size and 2.0 mm×2.0 mm in meshes, with each bag having 3 g moss and then sealed by a nylon wire. Moss bags were suspended in five urban exposure sites and then gathered after two months. The content of heavy metal in the tested moss were analysed by atomic absorption spectroscopy.

The main fi ndings were i copper was strongly bound to organic layer and seemed to be the main pollutant in the ecosystem while zinc was the most mobile element and did not accumulate to any specifi c part of the ecosystem, ii the forest mosses and epiphytic lichens were the most sensitive plant species and the seedlings of the vascular plants that had survived near the smelter were absent, iii there was a highly resistant soil decomposer community near the smelter although the activity of the soil animals and microbiota was low and their community structure altered, iv many insect species also suffered from pollution although the adverse effects caused by forest pests increased with pollutant load, v the low survival rate and breeding success of hole-nesting passerines near the smelter was caused by habitat changes and the quality of food, vi the adverse effects seem to be to some extent reversible after decreased pollutant load or remediation actions.

Aluminium prices started the second week of July with a spurt above US$3,300/t on the back of production woes coming from the Shanxi region in China. Previous attempts to breach the US$3,100/t barrier in June and May were short lived with prices not finding the support needed to stay above those levels. Aluminium bounced back with renewed strength in July on further power driven supply fears and new long positions entering the market. In June momentum came from production disruptions in UK (at the 145,000 tpy Holyhead smelter) and India (at the 360,000 tpy Angul smelter) and news that two smelters in the US (Glencore's 168,000 tpy Columbia Falls and Alcoa's 267,000 tpy Rockdale smelters) were curtailing their production levels on the back of prohibitive power prices. LME 3M prices tested the US$3,200/t level at the end of the month but the bulls appeared to hesitate to bridge that mark retreating towards US$3,150/t at the beginning of July.
