It has been found that during the spark plasma sintering process, under the condition of large current, short sintering time and lower sintering temperature, the metastable icosahedron quasicrystal phase in primary powder particles is kept. And the strong discharge plasma among particles can decompose or break the oxide film on the primary powder's surface, resulting in the increment of their combination strength. Five synthesis methods of AlN powder were discussed, namely direct nitrogenation of Al powder, carbothermal reduction of Al2O3, chemical vapor deposition, sol-gel method, self-propagating high-temperature synthesis and plasma chemical synthesis. The choice of AlN sintering additives and five sintering technologies were analysed, namely hot pressing sintering, pressureless sintering, spark plasma sintering, microwave sintering and self-propagating sintering. The preparation processes of AlN substrate and its influencing factors were expounded.

The results show that the vertical sintering speed changes notably with the proceeding of sintering process. After ignition and thermal retardation the bed permeability deteriorates and the sintering speed decreases notably because of the progress of physical chemistry reaction, formation and broaden of combustion zone, and formation of overwet zone. In about 25 min, the over wet zone vanishes, so the bed permeability meliorates and the speed arises rapidly.

The experimental results show that microwave sintering promotes the densification of green compacts with higher heating rate and reduced sintering cycle. The sintered relative density of 99.8% can be achieved during microwave processing under appropriate conditions. In addition, microwave sintering improves the uniformity and homogenization of W grain size, and yet leads to growth of W grain. Fe sintering aid degrades the microstructure uniformity and further coarsens W grains. The present investigation demonstrates the feasibility of applying microwave sintering technique to consolidate W-Cu composites and its promising outlook in reducing production cycle and cost.
