The radical scavenging activity of Laminaria japonica pigments was studied by the DPPH2,2-Diphenyl~(-1-picrylhydrazylassay. The total pigments showed a strong DPPH radical scavenging activity of 65.819% with the concentration of 0.52mg.ml~(-1). The DPPH radical scavenging activity of fucoxanthin was 19.85% with the concentration of 0.27mg.ml~(-1). The antimicrobial activity of pigment in Laminaria japonica was studied by the method of round paper. The results showed that the pigment extracts have activity against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Saricina flava and Saccharomyes cerevisia. The antibacterial activity of total pigments for Saccharomyes cerevisia was the strongest with an inhibition diameter of 18.9 mm; and the antibacterial activity of fucoxanthin for Saricina flava was also much significant with an inhibition diameter of 10.2 mm.

The major components of oxygen scavenger films are polymer, oxidizable compounds, and catalyst. In this study, the oxygen scavenging capacity and oxygen scavenging rate of the oxygen scavenger film in water were determined for evaluating the performance of the films. The results showed that the film composed of polyethylene, 4% sodium erythorbate, and 0.1% EDTA cupric salt had the best oxygen scavenging efficiency. On the 1st and 10th day, the oxygen removed rate of the film was 0.02 and 0.065 mg/cm2/day, respectively, from 300 ml water.

The free radical scavenging properties of six Aloe species are to be investigated in some modified chemical system. The antioxidant was purified by silica column and thin layer chromatography and analyzed by HPLC. A fraction was purified from A. brevifolia Mill showed the most effective scavenging activities on 〓 and ·OH (66. 01% and 38. 98% respectively). With the analysis of IR spectrum, UV spectrum and mass spectrum, the structure of FA was identifed as 8-C-D-glucopyranosyl-2- [2-hydroxy] propyl-5-methyl-7-hydroxychromone. Its scavenging activity on free radicals is higher than that of aloe-emodin. Its antioxidant activity may be due to the phenoxyl on glucosyl chromone which can be react with free radicals and form relatively stable free radicals.

The results showed that SP can inhibit the auto-oxidation of lard and soybean oil at 60 and can inhibit the activity of lipoxygenase significantly; SP also had scavenging effect on hydroxylradicals generated by Fenton system with IC50 value 6.220 mg/ml, under the concentration range of 1 mg/ml-50mg/ml, the scavenging rate of SP to -OH increased strongly when the concentration of SP increased, the maximum scavenging rate was 85.4%.

The paper studied the scavenging active oxygen radicals of brown pigment from chestnut shell. The results showed that the brown pigment had scavenging effects on hydroxyl radical, superoxide anion radical and aliphatic radicals on lipid-peroxidation. In the range of test concentration, the maximum scavenging or inhibition rate of the brown pigment to hydroxyl radical generated by Fenton reaction, superoxide anion radical generated by illuminating riboflavin system and linoleic acid auto-oxidation was 83.0%, 82.1% and 88.5% respectively.
