Some researchers believe that the latter area possesses savanna vegetation. Savannas are closely associated with seasonal drought, and they may be defined by climatic climax vegetation in tropical and subtropical areas. Based on the ecoclimatic analyses as well as the surviving vegetation in Taiwan, we inferred that the potential natural vegetations of these 2 semi-arid regions were not savanna but forest with some drought-deciduous trees. In conclusion, the physiognomic type of grassland dotted with trees may occur in small areas at present, but Taiwan lacks climate-shaped savanna climax vegetation.

本研究将疏林定义为分布於热带及亚热带之气候形塑的极相植群，气候分析结果表明台湾半乾旱区域之缺水逆境并不严重，再配合现生残存植群之观察，发现台湾有形相为疏林的现生局部性植群，但其潜在自然植群应为参杂有乾旱落叶之阔叶树种的森林，并不存在较大面积之潜在的气候型极相疏林。

This study provided a new research way and predictive framework for interpreting the complex climate and vegetation of Taiwan, and raised some remedial suggestions. The climatic grid layers, plot-data transforming program, physiognomic classification scheme of vegetation, ecoclimatic indices, moisture-thermal distribution of plants, and PNV map resulted from this study could facilitate further the managements and researches of the natural resources.

本研究为了解台湾气候及植群类型之空间分布提供一种新的研究途径与预测架构，同时检讨研究限制并提出改善建议，研究过程所得之气象资料检定程序、气候网格图层、样区资料整合程序、植群形相分类方案、生态气候指标、树种水热境制、PNV图层等成果也有助於自然资源之经营管理与科学研究。

For organizing vegetation submodel, started with the bottom-up gateway to agglomerate plot-data. The vegetation types must be confirmed before predictive vegetation mapping, therefore designed a transforming program to combine 585 plot-data from different surveys for the purpose. But the result of the classification and ordination of the combined plot-data couldn't display comprehensive vegetation types of Taiwan, because the plots were insufficient and disproportionate. Consequently, this study adopted the top-down gateway to divisive vegetation. After referring to Taiwan and east-Asia vegetation research papers and American national vegetation classification system etc., the physiognomic classification scheme of Taiwan had been drafted as vegetation submodel. The scheme included 4 levels: 2 classes, 5subclasses (subarctic, coldtemperate, cooltemperate, warmtemperate, subtropical), 8 groups (based on phenology and types of predominant leaf) and 16 formations (based on moisture regime and predominant taxa). And, the scheme dealt completely with the diverse nomenclatures of vegetation types in the past.

为建立植群亚模型，首先依「整合大量样区资料，由下而上的低阶植相聚类」之途径，设计建档程序及转档程式，成功整并不同来源之585个样区资料，但因样区数目不足且分布不均，分析结果未能显示出台湾完整的植群类型；故转循「预先设定植群类型，由上而下的高阶形相分类」之途径，经参考他国植群分类系统及台湾、东亚植群分类研究报告，订定分类原则及架构，提出4阶层之潜在植群形相分类方案：(1)寒原、森林2类群系纲；(2)亚寒带、冷温带、凉温带、暖温带、亚热带5类群系亚纲；(3) 8类群系组表徵优势植群之叶片的物候与形态；(4) 16类群系说明其水分境制及优势分类群；此方案统一处理了过去各种有关植群划分之纷岐名制，方案之各阶植群类型亦即本研究之植群亚模型。

Finally, PNV had been mapped according to Boolean discrete methods to connect climate submodel and vegetation submodel by GIS. PNV map first represented the spatial distribution of all vegetation types of 4 physiognomic levels in Taiwan, also integrated the diverse comments of altitudinal vegetation zones and geographical climatic regions in the past. Besides, the scattered ranges of 36 dominant trees in the moisture-thermal regime and climatic zone had been drawn via coordinating 585 plot-data with MWI and WDI.

为达绘制潜在植群图之最终目标，本研究以MWI及WDI之网格图层代表气候亚模型，以潜在植群形相分类方案之各阶类型代表植群亚模型，藉由布林分离法联系此2亚模型之关系，建构气候–植群分类模型，并以地理资讯系统绘制出包含群系纲、群系亚纲、群系组、群系之潜在植群图，首次完整呈现台湾各阶植群类型之空间分布，合理说明了山地植群带分化、北部植群下降及西南部冬季乾旱等现象，亦整合过去各种有关垂直性山地植群带状分化与水平性地理气候区划分的复杂意见；另外，本研究将585个样区林木座标标定於MWI及WDI，绘制36种林木於水热境制及热量气候带之分布范围。
