The author investigated the community of grasshoppers in Changbai Mountain area during the period of July to September 2001, complementally collected specimen and systematically collected and measured environmental factors from July to October in the following year, and consulted to specimen collected by Fengling Zhang and Yanlong-yang in 1979, 1980 and 1981. By analyzing and classifying the data of five years, the author analyzed the community construction and ecological adaptability of the grasshoppers in the area. The main aspects dealing with the grasshoppers are as follows:(1)the community construction and faunal geographical elements;(2)characteristics of their ecological distribution;(3)vertical distribution of grasshoppers in the northern slop;(4)the relationship between environmental factors and differences in shape of grasshoppers in different vertical belt of northern slop, etc.

Across the altitudinal gradient, a total of 12635 individuals belonging to 6 phyla, 15 classes and 33 orders were collected. With increasing altitude, the density of soil fauna decreased, but the group number was less affected. There was a higher co-occurrence of soil faunal communities along the altitudinal gradient, and Nematoda, Acarina, and Collembola were the dominant groups. Below the altitude 370 m, the Shannon-Wiener index, Pielou index, and Margalef abundance index increased with increasing altitude; while above the altitude 370 m, the Shannon-Wiener index and Pielou index decreased but the abundance index increased after an initial slight decrease.

Based on a quantitative analysis of radiolarian in 80 surface-sediment samples from the northern area of Okinawa Trough, this paper reported the species composition and faunal assemblages characteristic of radiolarian, expounded the distribution pattern of radiolarian abundance and diversity in surface sediments from this area. In this paper, a preliminary study on the relation of the distribution and abundance of radiolarian to environmental factors, such as chemical and physical properties of the overlying masses (sea-surface temperature, salinity, nutrients and primary productivity) and the type and composition of sea-bed sediments was made. The radiolarian data was evaluated using a Q-mode factor analysis to identify different faunal assemblages and their geographic distributions, then the relationship between radiolarian assemblages and distribution of water masses, hydrographic boundaries such as frontal systems was analyzed. A new radiolarian-based transfer function to estimate mean-annual sea surface temperature and seasonal range were examined to test its success in the study area.
