Density at the defect region significantly increased. 3D reconstruction suggested that defects became small. After hematoxylin-eosin staining, abundant fibrous connective tissue appeared in defect regions, with bony tissues. Mallory trichrism staining revealed that maroon mature bone tissues were found, surrounded by light blue chondroid tissues. Twelve weeks following repair, coronal defect regions were filled with callus. 3D reconstruction showed that defects were repaired. Defect region and surrounding bony tissues had bony connection, with thick bone trabecula and mature Haversian system.

In order to investigate the possibility of porous hydroxyapatite ceramics in the repair of skull bone defect, twenty-four rabbits were used. The bone defect model was created by operation to obtain a defect in parietal bone in a size of 1 cm x 1 cm. Filled the defect with HAC and methyl-methacrylate-syrene copolymer to fill the defect as control. At 1st, 2nd and 3rd months after operation, behavior of the rabbits was observed and then these animals were sacrificed and specimens were examined under microscope.

Results The long term results of the vascularized fibular graft varied in different types of bone defects. Nine patients with congenital pseudoarthrosis of tibia had the limb function restored in 65% and one had nonunion of fibular graft, 3 fractures(7 times), and 5 angular deformities. Three patients with congenital radial deficiency had 62% restoration of the limb function. All of them showed early closure of epiphyses of the grafted fibulae. Five cases with osteomyelitis and bone defects combined soft tissue deficiency had 94% restoration of the limb function, and only one occurred fracture of fibular graft. One case with soft tissue defect and concomitant ulnar defect, ulnar nerve and median nerve injury, 67% function of limb was recovered, and union of fibula graft was good. 100% function of limb was recovered in 1 case with cavernoma of radius and without occurring valgus deformity of donor site.
