The gods had condemned Sisyphus to ceaselessly rolling a rock to the top of a mountain, 神谴责西西弗斯要不断滚动石头山的顶部，

Whence the stone would fall back of its own weight. 何处石头就落回其自身的重量。

They had thought with some reason 他们原以为有某种原因

that there is no more dreadful punishment than futile and hopeless labor. 有没有更可怕的惩罚比徒劳而无望的劳动。

   

Nothing is told us about Sisyphus in the underworld. 什么也没有告诉我们西西弗在地狱。

Myths are made for the imagination. 神话是对想象力进行。

As for this myth, one sees merely the whole effort 至于这个神话，人们看到的只是整个工作

of a body straining to raise the huge stone 的身体使劲地提高巨石

To roll it and push it up a slope a hundred times over; 要滚，并推了一个斜坡一百倍以上;

Then Sisyphus watches the stone rush down in a few moments 于是西西弗斯手表石头赶下来了几分钟
