A series of tri-block copolymers of styrene/tetradecyl methyl acrylate/3-methacryloxyl-propyl thimethoxyl silane was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization. The structures of those copolymers were characterized by means of gel permeation chromatography, infrared spectrum, and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR). Effect of tri-block copolymers on the mechanical properties of glass fiber/polypropylene composites was also investigated.

In chapter four, molecular imprinting polymers against amino acid derivatives utilizing 2-VP+AM as combined functional monomer and trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate as tribasic cross-linker were prepared and result was compared with those with the same amino acid derivative as the imprinted molecules utilizing ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate as dibasic cross-linker. It was found that cross-link intensity of the molecular imprinting polymer is higher when TRIM was utilized and baseline separation for the imprinted molecule could be achieved. When TRIM was utilized as cross-linker more molecule is imprinted during the polymerization.

Ambient temperature self-crosslinking acrylic latexes were prepared through semicontinuous emulsion polymerization using 3 different polymerizable alkoxysilanes, i.e. vinyl tri silane (A172), Vinyl triethoxy silane and γ-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxy silane (A174). The hydrolysis of these siloxanes under different pH was characterized, and dependence of the latex and polymer properties on these siloxanes and their incorporated amounts in the polymers was studied.
