1782年6月20日,大陆会议(Continental Congress)获许可采用部分为美国设计的国徽,包括:一只白头海雕正在抓住箭和用牠的爪抓住橄榄树枝的国徽. 鹰一样,在美洲土着的很多宗教和习俗中扮演着极重要的角色. 这些美洲土着认为白头海雕是神和人之间传递信息的使者.
